GENEVA, Switzerland — An estimated 1.6 million people became Lutherans last year, reports the Lutheran World Federation, bringing the total populations of Lutherans in the world from 61.5 million in 1998 to 63.1 million in 1999. Churches in Asia and Africa reported the most new members, while Lutheran congregations in Europe and Latin America went slightly down.
