BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — The National Council of Evangelical Christians (CNCE) has recently launched an “awareness campaign” aimed at educating Protestant Christians and human rights activists to the religious inequities in Argentina. The CNCE wants Parliament to pass a law of “religious incorporation” that would grant Protestant churches equal legal status to the Roman Catholic Church.
There are nearly 12,000 evangelical congregations that exist in Argentina. At present, non-Catholic churches in the country are technically classified as “associations,” with legal status equal to a soccer team or a social club. Also, the CNCE wants to amend the constitution to end the historical privileges granted to the Roman Catholic Church and establish church and state separation.
