Pact increases Christian programs

MOSCOW — A broadcast agreement signed May 23 by international Christian broadcaster Trans World Radio (TWR) and two Russian radio networks nearly quadruples the number of radio stations carrying TWR’s Russian programming. Radio station networks Mayak and Yunost now carry 35 minutes of daily Christian programming available to Russia’s 147 million people, as well as the 10 million people living in neighboring Belarus.

Radio Mayak is the second-largest national network, with 477 FM and 88 AM transmitters throughout the country. Yunost, a channel for Russian youth, has 130 FM transmitters — 15 of which are in Belarus — and 25 AM stations.
Since these networks are government owned, TWR suggests they will likely be more stable during these days of severe nationwide economic crisis than privately owned networks could be.

With the new broadcasting arrangement, TWR transmits 10 minutes every morning and evening over Mayak and 15 minutes every evening on Yunost, for a total of 35 daily minutes.
