Halloween meant more than tricks and treats for Birmingham Baptists this year. An Oct. 31 fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage to the Birmingham Baptist Association (BBA) building.
Ricky Creech, BBA director of missions, believes a firebomb was thrown through the garage window of the building, which caused a fire to smolder inside the garage damaging two vehicles and the interior of the garage.
Because the fire did not erupt immediately, the heat melted the alarm sensor positioned just above the door that leads to the office building, Creech said. When the alarm sensor melted, it sent a signal to the police and fire department. “If it had not been for that, the building would have been gutted,” he said.
While the blaze did not make it inside the building, smoke damage did require the building to shut down for three days as repairs were made.
All computers are currently being disassembled and cleaned to see if they are salvageable.
As of Nov. 6, official rulings on the incident had not been made.
