Pastors attending the Alabama Baptist State Convention were urged to participate in the Alabama Baptist Minister Benefit Society.
Paul Moore said the fund helps ministers and their families with expenses following their death or that of a spouse.
“There’s an old saying you don’t miss the water until the well runs dry,” Moore said.
He told pastors there are good examples across the state of ministers who did not expect to die early, but helped their families by paying into the society. The membership fee is $5, with annual dues of $5, an amount Moore said should be agreeable to everyone. In addition, members contribute $1 each time a member dies and that money is given to the beneficiaries.
According to a report by the society in the convention’s “Book of Reports,” more than 1,260 claims have been paid since the society was established in 1904. The report said $104,800 was paid to beneficiaries during the past year.
The report said throughout the last several years that beneficiaries have received between $2,100–$2,300 upon the death of a member.
Moore said to his knowledge that no other state has such a program for ministers. (TAB)
