Tolerance

Tolerance

I receive The Alabama Baptist every week and I try to read most of the stories that are published. I find myself losing interest, however, due to the lack of tolerance of people of alternate lifestyles and the arrogance that is readily evident in some of these stories.

Jesus Christ was, and will be, the only perfect human to ever walk the face of the Earth and one of the things that He attempted to teach was tolerance.

In reading the Letters to the Editor section of your paper I was taken aback by Rhett Ellis’ apology about the content of his book “Castle of Wisdom.” The attitude that was taken in the review of his book is inexcusable. Simple fact is that homosexuality and prostitution are, and have been, parts of human existence since the beginning of recorded time. We don’t have to approve of, nor do we have to encourage these activities, to encourage our children to try to be tolerant of such things and not to instill the sense of hatred because we feel these things are against the ways of the Christian faith.

If we start to reintroduce the prejudices of the past then we may as well return to the days of the Witch Trials. That mentality is what we are passing on to our children. To assume that our children don’t know about these things is
ludicrous. Although we don’t want our children to adopt these behaviors, we do need to encourage them to pray and seek the wisdom that can only come from God. Prayer for these wayward spirits is what needs to emphasized, not hiding the fact that they exist.
