KADUNA, Nigeria — Sharia, the strict Islamic code of conduct, is now part of the legal system of Kano, northern Nigeria’s most populous state.
The legal code officially went into effect Dec. 5. The debate over the adoption of sharia into Kano’s legal system ended in June when the legal code was formally launched during a rally attended by thousands of Nigerians, reports the BBC.
However, observance of the laws officially took effect on Dec. 5. Leaders of Kano’s government, including Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, have assured the press that the state’s Christian minority would not be expected to follow the code.
Violence between Christians and Muslims erupted in the neighboring state of Kaduna earlier this year when officials there attempted to incorporate sharia into their legal system, reports Zenit News Service.
