At its recent scholarship banquet, the University of Mobile (UM) surpassed its goal of $200,000 for scholarships, netting more than $225,000 for UM students.
The gala event — in its second year — was held Sept. 28 at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center in downtown Mobile. The evening literally put the spotlight on the university’s students and faculty, with students from VOICES of Mobile and RamCorps drum and bugle corps performing throughout the event.
In addition to the $225,000 raised for scholarships, UM President Mark Foley announced the commitment of “a very significant gift” from UM trustee Ruby Lauzon. The gift, he said, will “vastly expand student scholarships through the Edgar and Ruby Lauzon Scholarship Fund” and establish the Ruby Lauzon Faculty Development Fund, which will produce an annual yield that will support the professional development of faculty.
At the banquet, three professors shared why they teach at UM and what makes the institution unique, highlighting — as Foley did — UM’s desire to produce “change agents.”
Former U.S. Sen. and Georgia Gov. Zell Miller was the keynote speaker at the event. (UM)
