It isn’t every day that you find church members who will help their pastor look for his keys in the river for four hours.
Then again, it isn’t every day that you find a church like Valley Springs Baptist Church, Cullman.
“There is really a sweet harmony in the church,” said Pastor Jason Hancock.
The West Cullman Baptist Association church celebrated its 100th anniversary May 25, marking a centurylong effort of reaching out to the small community around Smith Lake.
Hancock and others have seen the work of the church in people’s lives firsthand.
One example is Valley Springs Baptist’s visitation program, through which church members go to see people from the community in nursing homes, hospitals and assisted-living facilities.
“We would like to see the church grow and win the lost, just to bring the lost to know Jesus,” said Jenny Hammock, a member of Valley Springs. “We want to see it make a difference in the community and the lives of the people in the community.”
At the anniversary ceremony, which had double the normal attendance of 80 people, the congregation reviewed the history of the church, marking the three past church buildings as the highlight of the century.
The day also served as the decoration service, complete with lunch and an afternoon singing led by the Blue Grace gospel group.
The church was presented a framed certificate by Melanie Metz of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission commemorating the anniversary. (TAB)
