Lance celebrates 10 years at helm of State Board

Great pastor. Great teacher. Visionary administrator. Person of great spiritual discernment and people skills.

That was how Henry Cox, president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention (ABSC) in 2005 and 2006, described Rick Lance at an Aug. 14 reception held in honor of his 10th anniversary as executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions.

“Dr. Lance has done an outstanding job as the executive director,” Cox said. “We’ve truly prospered under Dr. Lance’s leadership. His innovations at the State Board of Missions have been welcomed by Alabama Baptists and recognized by other conventions.”

Roger Willmore, current president of the ABSC and pastor of Deerfoot Baptist Church, Trussville, agreed. “Alabama is blessed to have the best” executive director in the Southern Baptist Convention, he said.

The reception planning committee showed its appreciation to Lance and his wife, Pam, by offering to send the couple on a Baptist heritage tour of Europe.

Lance described the celebration as a great surprise and expressed his gratitude for the privilege of  working alongside Alabama Baptists in fulfilling the Great Commission.

“Alabama Baptists are rock-solid people, and we at the State Board of Missions are to lead churches to refocus on the Great Commission. We are not done yet,” he said. “Unless God changes things, we are not halfway done under my tenure.” (SBOM)
