After nearly 13 years of service as director of missions for Coosa River Baptist Association, Luther Williams will be retiring at the end of October. Williams came to the association in 1996 after serving for 22 years as a Southern Baptist representative to Brazil.
Although he has no specific plans for his post-retirement years, Williams intends to “follow where the Lord may lead.”
He anticipates this will mean taking on short-term missions projects, serving in interim capacities or supplying preaching.
“I just want to make myself available to be on mission with the Lord,” he said.
A native of Danville, Va., Williams earned his bachelor’s degree at Carson-Newman College; master of divinity and master of religious education degrees at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; his doctor of ministry degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; and a master of science in social work at the University of Tennessee.
Married for 43 years to Loretta, a graphic artist for Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center, Williams is the father of three grown children and the grandfather of nine. The Williamses are members of First Baptist Church, Talladega. A retirement reception honoring Williams will immediately follow Coosa River Association’s 175th annual meeting Oct. 16 at Shocco Springs. Tentatively scheduled for 8 p.m., the reception will take place in the chapel annex.
