Running on Ice

Running on Ice

Vonetta Flowers with W. Terry Whalin. Birmingham, Ala.: New Hope Publishers, 2005. 216 pp. (Hardback).

This is an inspiring and exciting story about 2002 Olympic gold medalist Vonetta Flowers. The first African-American to win a gold medal in the Winter Games, she trusts God and enjoys the relationship she has to Him through Christ.

Assisting Flowers was Terry Whalin, a prolific writer who has produced more than 60 books.

Quite interestingly, Flowers parallels her faith in Christ to her experience in the bobsled. Both require faith.

In the foreword, another Olympian, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, shares her faith and writes: “Like Vonetta Flowers, I’m a Christian and I can’t separate my faith from who I am.”

This reviewer especially enjoyed and appreciated Flowers’ last sentence in the book: “Truly anyone can learn to run on ice if they first learn to walk by faith.”
