Billy Litton teaches Conquering Chemical Dependency, a 12-step, Christ-centered recovery program, to 18 to 25 students each week at Calvary Baptist Church, Centreville. An ordained minister for about 32 years, he also offers counseling to students outside class and speaks to churches or groups on how to handle drug and alcohol situations in the home.
Q: What led you to this ministry?
A: I had to take a 2-month-old baby to the hospital. The mother, who was on drugs, rolled over on the baby and smothered it to death. I just went down on my knees to the Lord and asked Him what I could do to help this type of situation. It was as plain as if He were talking to me and telling me, “You have got to start something to help them.”
Q: How did you begin this ministry?
A: I came out of Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, got into secular work and became an alcoholic for 13 years. Then, 17 years ago, God took the alcohol away from me and put me back where I belonged — in Christian work. I can communicate with them. I’ve been there and I understand where they are.
Q: How do other family members support you?
A: They support me 100 percent. They are really prayerful for me. My children have their daddy back — I wasn’t there when I was an alcoholic — doing what Christ wants him to do.
Q: What does the ministry demand?
A: It demands my time, concern and love. I have to do a lot of praying and studying to keep up with what’s going on. They need someone who understands and someone who cares. I let them know that only through Christ can they stay away from their addictions. I can’t be with them all the time but Christ can.
