The Gann Brothers, a country-flavored trio with a nice, family-style blend, wisely committed this project to producer Michael Sykes, an acknowledged expert on family groups, country/southern gospel and tight three-part harmony.
The album opens with an old gospel standard, “I’ll Live in Glory,” followed by Sheldon Mencer’s thoughtful melody “Quiet Time.” On “Safe in the Grip of His Grace,” I thought I heard some solid bass vocals; but like other popular trios, the Gann Brothers have not added a fourth part — just a clever production device.
Real country gospel fans will especially enjoy “Only Here for a Little While,” where the steel guitarist shows up to deliver a proper country-style intro.
Then, for the last number on the project, Sykes and the Gann Brothers take a sharp turn — from Inspirations to Imperials — to close with the contemporary classic, “Because of Who You Are” …
For a moment, I thought I was listening to a young David Will again — and that’s high praise indeed.
