Americans are indebted to the military and law-enforcement personnel that serve this great nation. They represent not a tyrannical government but the rule of law — a concept that was radical when first envisioned by the Founding Fathers but which is often taken for granted today. The law is a good thing because it originated with the good God who created the universe.
America’s Constitution and laws find their roots in the Ten Commandments of God. With all the debate today concerning the display of these Ten Commandments on public property, one important truth is often overlooked — most people do not understand what the laws of God are all about.
Most people mistakenly believe that God’s laws are rules that must be obeyed if a person is going to heaven. The problem is that no one can obey the laws of God completely, and the implication is that no one can go to heaven.
So why then did God give the Ten Commandments? There are two reasons: 1) to describe what God is like; and 2) to show people that they will never be good enough for God. As a result, people need to be rescued from their present condition of imperfection (called “sin”). They need a rescuer (a savior).
The good news (the gospel) is that God has provided such a savior — God sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to take the death penalty that people have earned through their disobedience to God. Three days after He died for people’s sins, Jesus rose from the dead and is alive today.
Jesus invites everyone to trust Him as his or her Savior and proclaim Him as Lord. By doing so, an individual can be assured of eternity in heaven, not by obeying God’s laws but by entering into a relationship with the Law Giver by faith in God’s grace as it was demonstrated in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Do you want to know God? Then believe that Jesus is God, that He gave His life for your sins and that Jesus rose from the dead and is alive today. Then invite Jesus to come into your life and be your Master and Lord.
