Want to know God?

Want to know God?

Dawson Memorial Baptist, Homewood

The cynic says, “The key to life is not about who you know or what you know; instead the key to life is what you know about who you know.” This approach suggests that you need to know negative information about the rich and the powerful in order to leverage these folks into doing what you want.

The saint also says the key to life is “what you know about who you know,” but the saint’s reasoning is different than the cynic’s. The saint recognizes life begins with knowing an all-powerful and all-loving God, and as you know more about Him, you can experience both abundant life now and eternal life tomorrow.

It is possible to know about God without knowing Him. The Gospels reveal that most of the people who opposed Jesus had an abundance of excellent information regarding God. They quoted the Scriptures and were faithful in attendance at their place of worship; yet they did not know God. It was not that God was hiding from them. Instead, when they saw Him, heard Him and visited with Him, they did not recognize Him. By rejecting and ignoring Jesus, the Son of God, they were rejecting God. The first step toward knowing God is knowing Jesus.

The first step to knowing God has not changed in 2,000 years; it still begins with recognizing that Jesus is the Son of God. The identity of Jesus as the Son of God is more than a doctrinal truth to be affirmed. It is a catalyst for faith.
When we know who Jesus is, we will want to accept His invitation to experience forgiveness and to know the reality of changed character and conduct. Once we know Him, then it is both desirable and essential to know more about Him. Learning more about Jesus allows us to grow our relationship with Him.

Do you want to know God? Accept God’s invitation to be in relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus, the Christ. Want to grow in experiential knowledge of God?  Through the study of the Bible, disciplined prayer and fellowship with His people, you know your Creator and the purpose for your existence.
