Samford to increase ’09 tuition; Judson, UM still to set rates

Samford University in Birmingham will have modest tuition and fee increases for 2009–2010, based on preliminary figures approved by the board of trustees in its regular winter meeting Dec. 2.

Approval of rates is the first step in the university’s annual budget-planning process. Undergraduate tuition would increase 4.6 percent.

Additional increases include pharmacy, 4 percent; law, 6.5 percent; and nurse anesthesia, 3 percent.  Room increases will average about 5.5 percent, while board fees will average about 5 percent depending on the meal plan.

Judson College in Marion and the University of Mobile (UM) have yet to decide on tuition for the next academic year.

Judson President David Potts said that the current unstable economic climate is being carefully evaluated and that final determination about tuition for the 2009–2010 academic year will be made by the board of trustees in its May meeting.

“I can say that there will not be a precipitous increase in costs to our students,” Potts said.

At UM, the board of trustees will address tuition, room and board for the 2009–2010 year during its April meeting. (TAB)
