David E. Browning, retired pastor of several Southern Baptist churches, died March 3, one week before his 96th birthday.
Born in Waco, Texas, Browning graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He also spent time studying in Oxford, England, and Hardwyn, Wales.
Browning was ordained into the ministry at the age of 20. From 1963 to 1969, he served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Troy. He also served at Mountain Hill Baptist Church, Sellers, and Valley Park Baptist Church, Montgomery.
Browning also served as pastor of churches in Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
He taught at Alabama State University in Montgomery for 12 years and later as an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Browning also had works of poetry published in “Theology Today.”
Since 2001, he had been a member of First Baptist Church, Auburn.
Browning was preceded in death by one son.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, LaMena; three sons; 10 grandchildren; and 16 greatgrandchildren. (TAB)
