Grief — you may be experiencing it right now. It may be something you have learned to live with since that loved one died years ago. Or you may not know when you will face it.
Whether in the past, present or future, you will at some point encounter grief.
And Community Grief Support Service of Birmingham wants to provide you with the tools to work through it.
A seminar led by Alan Wolfelt, Understanding Grief: Touchstones for Hope and Healing, is set for March 28 at Samford University’s Reid Chapel.
“Our society doesn’t understand grief,” said Peggy McClure, executive director of Community Grief.
The seminar will instruct people how to recognize grief, reflect on loss and learn the needs that surface after someone dies. It will also show them how to come to a better understanding of grief.
“The focus of this presentation is on hope and healing,” McClure noted.
Wolfelt — a noted author, educator and grief counselor — is internationally known, she said, noting that he has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” the Larry King show, NBC’s “Today” show and “Nick News.”
He has written more than 20 books and received the Association for Death Education and Counseling’s Death Education Award. Wolfelt is currently the director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colo.
Registration for the seminar begins at 6:30 p.m., and the session will last 7–9 p.m. Each participant will receive handouts at the seminar.
Wolfelt will also be presenting programs March 29.
He will speak at a breakfast program for clergy and pastoral care, a Rotary/Kiwanis event and a seminar for human resource directors.
The Birmingham and Shelby Baptist associations, along with other organizations, are underwriters of this event.
