WMU report focuses on need for giving, going

If we keep our hearts focused on the mandate of the Great Commission, God will be faithful in providing the people and financial resources needed to reach a world desperately in need of the hope found in Christ,” said Wanda Lee, executive director of national Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU).

In 2008, national WMU helped raise about $141 million for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Lee told messengers during the WMU report Tuesday afternoon. And in an economic downturn with its lack of employment and income, sacrificial giving is going to be “more important than ever” in the days to come, she said.

Churches are encouraged to draw attention to missions, as well as hunger issues at home and internationally, Lee said, noting the new bread banks available. “We need to raise the awareness of the increasing level of hunger and the simple ways we can help meet needs in our communities, our nation and among the poorest nations of the world.”

National WMU offers resources to help congregations combat hunger and engage in missions, such as its 11 magazines and seven supplemental subscription items like resource kits, according to the Book of Reports.

“If you haven’t seriously taken a look at WMU lately, we invite you to do that,” Lee said. For more information, visit www.wmu.com.    (TAB)
