Want to know God?

Want to know God?

The first question might be “Who is the God you want to know?” There are many “gods” out there, but they don’t fill the need of your heart and life.

Deep within each of us, there is a desire to “connect” with the eternal. We describe that need in many ways and seek to find fulfillment in many places. We seek religious paths. We try to be good.

We attempt to fill that need within us with things that just don’t last. We feel frustrated and stuck. We lose our way. We sometimes give up on the search. Don’t give up — there is someone waiting for you.

Who is that someone? Is there a God “who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us” (Eph. 3:20 NIV)?

That God is pictured in one of the most famous stories of the Bible, indeed one of the greatest of all literature. Jesus told the story in the midst of the stories from the lost and found in Luke 15. The story we call the parable of the prodigal son was described by German pastor Helmut Thielicke as “The Waiting Father.”

God is waiting for you to come home. He knows you and wants you to know Him. He knows where you have been and what you have done.

And He still loves you. Because of His grace, He wants you to find your special place in His presence, home and work.

He has made it possible for you to come home through the death, burial and resurrection of His Son, Jesus. He wants you to be a part of bringing others home to Him, too.

How can you come home to God?

By believing that what God did through Jesus He did for you. That belief in your mind moves to your heart and you take action (repent) and just like the prodigal son in Jesus’ story, you come home.

You come with all your planned confessions. But even as you are trying to get the words out of your mouth, God, your Father, is already planning a party for you and your return to Him.

Don’t be homesick or heartsick anymore; come home to the “Waiting Father.”
