Seventeen people from Mount Zion Baptist Church, Huntsville, went to Guatemala City June 7–14 to minister among the more than 10,000 people living around the city dump.
Working through the Guatemala Baptist Convention, the team from the Madison Baptist Association church ran two medical clinics in two areas of the city, helped with construction on a house damaged by a mudslide and led women’s ministries.
“It opened our eyes to the poverty level and the need that was there,” said David Cochran, minister of missions and outreach.
Charlotte Madison, who co-led the team with Cochran, said, “Our hearts were very burdened” for the people living at the dump. The church already is making plans to return to the area.
Mount Zion Baptist also participated in a World Changers missions project June 20–27 in its own back yard — Huntsville. Teenagers from the church were among 250 participants from nine states helping with construction projects for 20 homes, including installing vinyl siding, roofing and painting. Thirty-five decisions were made for Christ.
Despite the heat, Cochran said, “The kids came with a spirit to serve, and they did a good job. They worked for the glory of God.”
