Art professor Vann wins Samford teaching award

Lowell Vann, art professor at Samford University in Birmingham, was presented the school’s 2008–09 John H. Buchanan Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching on Aug. 25.

After coming to the university in 1965, Vann served as chair of the Samford art department for 36 years. He holds a bachelor’s from Samford, a master’s from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a doctorate from Florida State University in Tallahassee.

He was also called “a professor who makes art fun and opens the eyes of those who take his course for even just an elective.”

A co-founder of an area artists’ cooperative, Artists Incorporated, Vann has served as pastor of Rocky Ridge First Baptist Church, Hoover, since 1992.

Well known for his chalk drawing ministry, Vann has presented his chalk work more than 1,600 times since 1953.

In presenting the award, Samford provost Brad Creed cited Vann for his devotion to his students and to Samford.

Students who nominated Vann for the award describe him as a “hard, productive and learned teacher who gives his all and more to his students,” Creed said.
