TAB Web site a resource, not an e-edition

The Alabama Baptist’s award-winning Web site is not an e-edition of the state Baptist paper. The Web site is a resource for Christian living.

President and Publisher Bob Terry said it was important to make that distinction because some churches have canceled their subscriptions to the weekly print edition of The Alabama Baptist thinking the paper is available online.

“Not a single page of the state Baptist paper can be found online,” Terry said. “In fact, only one story from the current week is posted online.”

He said the rest are posted a week after they appear in the print edition and are archived according to topics.

Terry said the Web site is organized around 10 major topics, each with several sub-topics. That allows the paper to post all stories related to a single topic in one place.

“If a reader wants to find out about missions in Ukraine, click on International News or Religion News/Europe, then the country and every story we have printed on Ukraine will come up. That makes The Alabama Baptist Web site a great resource for information about missions, about issues, about churches,” he said.

“Our Web site is not intended to be an e-version of the paper,” he continued.

However, the Web site is used to convey major news events as quickly as possible, such as the recent resignation of North American Mission Board’s Geoff Hammond, which was posted just minutes after the announcement.

The Alabama Baptist also has found success using Facebook and Twitter to share news updates and information.

Nearly 650 people are “friends” with The Alabama Baptist on Facebook (Alabama Baptist) and close to 400 people follow the paper on Twitter (@AlabamaBaptist).

The state Baptist paper remains the primary source of information and inspiration about what God is doing through Baptists at home and around the world.

Churches that furnish the paper continue to participate more in Baptist life and give more to missions.

The Web site offers a great resource. The social media options are available for those who want the latest information, but there’s no substitute for reading The Alabama Baptist each week.
