Molly Jenson

Maybe Tomorrow
Bully! Pulpit Records

If Christian music can claim her, then claim her and hold on tight. Because Molly Jenson is special. Her music is special. The cover to her CD is special. It sounds strange, but it’s true — CCM just doesn’t put out records that look like this. And it’s not putting out records that sound like this. And none of its children ever make it on NPR either. So by all means — own Molly Jenson! In the first five tracks from her new album “Maybe Tomorrow” Jenson makes sweet, soft, folky, poppy, rainy-day drippings perfect for a melancholy TV drama montage, which producers of shows like “Knight Rider” and “Grey’s Anatomy” have already figured out and capitalized on. And it sounds great. Slow. Soulful. Sliding. Like slow motion winks. But then, oh man, track 5 — “The Edgy 8 Ball Song.” It’s a baptism. It’s electrocution. It’s a lost track from “Jagged Little Pill.” And it just keeps getting better. If you like Sheryl Crow, if you remember the greatness of Fleming and John, if you want to believe that Christian music can be better … ladies and gentleman, Molly Jenson.
