The Lads
Word Entertainment
The Lads are the latest in a lengthening list of CCM success stories (Detour 180, Solace, The Parachute Band) that start in New Zealand. Initially given the title “Secrets of the Universe,” this self-titled album — their eighth production, but only second since their American introduction — is another great chapter.
The band has retooled their sound to preteen tastes even further: catchy, zany pop, silly but biblically based lyrics (“I was knit together like a cable-knit sweater), and uninhibited energy a la Five Iron Frenzy or even They Might Be Giants.
Refreshingly absent is the syrupy production common with standard Disney-bred tween fare. Kids will dig it. Parents will dig it.
