UM promotes Breland to vice president

The University of Mobile’s (UM) Roger Breland has been named to a new role at the school — vice president for project development.

Formerly director and dean of UM’s Center for Performing Arts (CPA), Breland will continue to work with the CPA as executive director, but his primary role will be in the new vice president position.

Al Miller, formerly associate dean of the CPA, has been promoted to dean. Miller has worked side by side with Breland to develop the CPA, which has more than 300 students and 24 performing ensembles.

Miller also serves as director of the A Cappella Choir and the ensemble VOICES of Mobile. He holds a bachelor of music from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, master of music from Samford University in Birmingham and doctorate from Florida State University in Tallahassee. He has founded and directed vocal groups in churches, high schools, colleges and universities for 35 years, presenting concerts internationally and at the White House.

Breland’s new role is a key leadership role, said UM President Mark Foley. He will assist Foley in developing strategies and building relationships in the school’s 2020 Vision, the plan to become a nationally recognized leader in the revitalization of Christian character and faith in America.

“Throughout his career, Roger Breland has demonstrated the drive, determination and creativity to see what can be and to make it a reality,” Foley said.

“As the founder and director of TRUTH, one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording and performing groups, and currently [in his role at UM], Roger has a proven track record of success,” he explained. (UM)
