Want to know God?

Want to know God?

First Baptist Church, Fairhope

Christmas ignites excitement. Bells ring, children sing and expectation fills the air. What a great time to know the real reason for this special season. The heart-stirring biblical message is that God sent Jesus into the world so that we could know of His love for us.

A favorite Christmas story involves a young, challenged child in a Christmas play. The teacher gave him the part of the innkeeper and helped him rehearse his lines to a tired Joseph and Mary: “Go away. We don’t have any room.”

The night of the play, things did not go as planned. When Joseph knocked at the inn door, the young actor, caught up in the situation, opened the door wide, saying, “Come on in. We’ll make room for you.” It was a never-forgotten Christmas moment.

Have you made room for Jesus? We can get so caught up in the Christmas rush that we miss God’s Christmas gift. Instead of crowding Him out, a never-forgotten Christmas moment can happen to each of us if we invite Him in as Lord and Savior.

Jesus came into the world to save anyone and everyone. The first Christmas had an invitation list that included rugged shepherds and celebrity wise men. Both came to worship and both were filled with joy. It doesn’t matter whether you are rich or poor, educated or uneducated; Jesus came into the world for you.

Everyone is in need of forgiveness. All have sinned so all of us need a Savior. The baby in the manger became our sacrifice at the cross. He was born to die, taking our sin upon Him that we may receive His offer of forgiveness and eternal life.

When we receive God’s gift of Jesus, we receive God’s total package of forgiveness, peace and eternal life. Here is a gift that seems too good to be true, but it is so good that it has to be true.

My prayer for you this Christmas comes from a song with a catchy tune: “Oh come into my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for you.” May this be your best Christmas ever as you come to know God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

To have a never-forgotten Christmas, let your “go away” become a “come in.” It is an invitation filled with eternal promises.
