Reality Radio’s Christian format abandoned

The new owner of WRRS 101.1, formerly Reality Radio, has abandoned the station’s contemporary Christian format after purchasing the station in September.

However, the station is hoping to still reach its fans, both in Alabama and worldwide, through its Internet site.

Steve Shelton, president of STG Media LLC, purchased the station last fall, pledging his support for Reality and giving the station until the end of 2000 to begin to show the promise of profitability.

Shelton said at the time that Reality was losing a six-figure total each month, but believed the station could do better.

“I believe in what they’re doing, I believe in their vision,” Shelton said in September. “With the signal they have, with the studio facility they have, they can do a whole lot better.”

Shelton did not return a telephone call seeking comment on the station’s recent change to a Top 40 format that was begun Feb. 1.

While Reality 101 can no longer be heard on the radio, the station is turning to the Internet to continue its ministry.

The Web site at www.reality101.com was created as a response to audience outcry after the station’s contemporary Christian format was dropped.

Officials with Reality said they received nearly 1000 e-mails demanding the return of the station.

Information on the site said the Reality Board of Directors did not want this ministry to die, “so an Internet station was created to carry on the incredible radio ministry. Now Reality 101 can be heard all over the world.”

The site said the station’s ministry remains the same, “to lead people to Jesus Christ through the power of great contemporary Christian music.”
