UM soliciting ‘Drawl’ entries

The University of Mobile is calling for entries in the 12th annual “Art With a Southern Drawl” juried competition, which features the best in visual arts from seven southern states.

The competition is open to artists working in any media, and only original art is accepted. Artists must either be born in or currently live in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee or Texas.

Joseph Mella will serve as judge for “Drawl.” Mella manages, curates and oversees operations of the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery and its collections. Mella served as curator of exhibitions and collections at the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, Ill., and in a similar capacity at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont.

“Art With a Southern Drawl” is under the direction of Charles M. Clark, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Mobile. Wanda Sullivan, art instructor, is assistant director. Awards will be given for Best in Show, Award of Excellence, Spirit of the South, Southern Humor: I Did it and I’m Glad and merit awards.
