Tropical storms swept over Micronesisa, the Koreas, the Philippines, Japan and South China, bringing torrential downpours and wind speeds that reached 120 mph. The storms caused devastating damage to homes and caused several deaths, including members of the Korean Campus Crusade for Christ (KCCC).
Steve Douglass, president of Campus Crusade for Christ International (CCCI), said, “It is with deep and profound regret that I share with you the deaths of three of our staff and a staff child. On July 6, a boat carrying several of our Korean Campus Crusade (KCCC) staff capsized near Batangas, Philippines. Jun Sung-Hwa, the wife of Oh Yun-Tack, and Oh Eun-Su, their six-year-old dayghter perished, as well as 23-year-old Lee Seung-Ok, a female staff trainee. Kim Jung-Eun, a 23-year-old female staff trainee, was lost at sea and as of yet her body has not been recovered.”
Witnesses said the boat carrying the KCCC staff members and their families was going from Puerto-lallera in Mindor island to Batngas. It was carrying 24 Koreans, including 22 KCCC missionaries and college students who had been in the Phillipines for language study since the beginning of February.
