Truth founder partners with University of Mobile

Roger Breland, founder of the internationally acclaimed contemporary Christian music group Truth, has been named special assistant to the president and artist in residence at the University of Mobile (UM), according to UM President Mark Foley.

The collaboration between the award-winning  musician and the Baptist university is designed to bring a national spotlight to a strong music program, Foley said.

The affiliation between Breland and UM is one of the first projects undertaken by Breland since the June 16 Truth concert in Nashville that capped off his 31-year career as founder and director. “I spent 31 years working with young people, and that’s what I love doing. I want to continue doing what I’ve always done” at UM and with other organizations, Breland said.

He will serve on the faculty during church music week at Ridgecrest Conference Center in Ridgecrest, N.C., and at Glorieta Conference Center in Glorieta, N.M., for the Southern Baptist Convention.

At UM, Breland will serve as consultant to the president, specifically in the areas of fund raising, student recruitment and general promotion. He will serve as a guest lecturer and assist Thomas Rowell, chairman of the fine arts department, in program development and promotion as well as student recruiting.

In addition, Breland will work with Rowell to develop events to increase awareness about the fine arts program.

Breland, an Alabama Baptist and a native of Mobile, said his relationship with UM is a long-standing one. “In the early years, Truth held rehearsals at the University of Mobile,” he said. Breland is also a former member of the UM board of trustees.

Prior to starting Truth, Breland served as minister of music at First Baptist Church and youth at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Mobile. With his wife, Linda, Breland founded Truth in 1971.
