Retired Alabama pastor Raymond Scroggins of Tallassee died May 11. He was 94.
A native of Tallapoosa County, Scroggins served as pastor of Baptist churches in Alabama and Kentucky. The Alabama churches included East Tallassee Baptist Church, Good Hope Baptist Church and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Elmore Association; South Roebuck Baptist Church and Irondale Baptist Church, Birmingham Association; and First Baptist Church, Columbiana, Shelby Association.
After retirement, Scroggins served as a deacon and Bible teacher into his 90s, speaking at senior adult functions and various revivals.
He also served as chairman of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions executive committee and a term as vice president of the Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference.
Scroggins attended Howard College (now Samford University), where he received a degree in history, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
Scroggins is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bennie Sue Welch Scroggins; two daughters; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
