Marvin Spry, who served several Alabama Baptist churches as minister of music, died Nov. 9 at age 76.
The Birmingham resident most recently served Shades Crest Baptist Church, Birmingham, as minister of music and senior adults, a position from which he retired in 2002.
During his many years of service to Alabama Baptist congregations he was minister of music of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Birmingham, (1963-1968) and Parker Memorial Baptist Church, Anniston, (1978-1986). He also served Parker Memorial as associate pastor 1986-1990. Besides serving churches in Alabama he also served churches in North Carolina and Florida.
The North Carolina native began his career as a teacher, having earned several degrees from George Peabody College for Teachers, Vanderbilt University, including a master’s in music education in 1953.
His wife, Colleen, preceded him in death Oct. 30. He is survived by one daughter, two sons and six grandchildren.
