Baptist Pastor, professor Robertson dies at 87

Jackson Ramsey Robertson Sr. of Hoover died April 15. He was 87.

A Baptist minister and college professor for more than 50 years, Robertson served Southern Baptist churches in Alabama and Kentucky.

Robertson was a Birmingham native and graduated from Woodlawn High School where he was involved in drama, music and debate. He attended Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and the University of Louisville in Kentucky where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from University of Louisville School of Law, which later presented him with an honorary doctorate of law degree.

He graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and served as pastor of Langdale Baptist Church, Langdale (now Valley, Ala.); First Baptist Church, Livingston; Seventh Street Baptist Church, Cullman; First Baptist Church, Wetumpka; First Baptist Church, Uniontown; Pike Road Baptist Church, Pike Road; Fredonia .Baptist Church, Fredonia, Ky.; and Lynch Baptist Church, Lynch, Ky.

In the 1930s and 1940s Robertson worked in broadcasting as an announcer and producer at radio stations in Louisville, Ky., and Monroe, La. He also wrote and produced “The Baptist Hour” for the Southern Baptist Radio Commission in Atlanta, Ga. He was alumni secretary at Howard College and was part of the early work to relocate the school from the East Lake campus to the Lakeshore Drive site that eventually became Samford University.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years Mary Jeanette Ziegler Robertson, a native of Monroe, La.

He is survived by three children, three grandchildren, one great-grandson, one sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
