Someone You Should Know — Dewayne Hamilton

Dewayne Hamilton is someone you should know. After completing two years of active duty in the Army, he entered the University of Alabama at Birmingham and later became the first black president of Baptist Campus Ministries (BCM) at a predominately white university in Alabama history. During his tenure, Hamilton helped integrate the university’s chapter of BCM to the point that seven of the 22 leaders and about one-third of the students involved in the group are black. While no longer president, Hamilton continues to serve and work with UAB’s BCM.

Q: Why did you accept the position of president of BCM?

A: I wanted to make an impact for the Kingdom. I believe the God we serve is universal. So in my study of love (God) I wondered why we weren’t like God in accepting all people. I felt this was one way to bridge that gap.

Q: What did this position demand?

A: It demanded a whole bunch of time for me and it made me study cultures a lot more and how we react in love to one another.

Q: What did you get from it?

A: In working with race relations whenever we can’t get along with others, we need to ask ourselves how is our relationship with God. God is our first relationship and whatever issues we have that are unresolved within that relationship will bear fruit in our relationship with others.

Q: How did other family members support you?

A: I had great support from my mom, my girlfriend, my family and my friends.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this ministry in the future?

A: Currently, I am serving on the missions team and we are making it our missions team and we are making it our mission to get people involved and open their eyes and opening ourselves up to servanthood working closely with one another in doing projects.
