Robert U. Ferguson Sr., a longtime Alabama Baptist pastor and leader, died Oct. 8. He was 77
Ferguson, a World War II veteran, graduated from Samford University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
During his years as a pastor, he served as a pastor of Summerdale Baptist Church, Summerdale, and Oakdale Baptist Church, Mobile, as well as several churches in Louisiana and Oregon.
For the last 18 years of his ministry, Ferguson served with the Department of Cooperative Ministries with National Baptists for the Louisiana and Arkansas Baptist state conventions.
Ferguson also served on the executive board of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and as a trustee for Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Ark. As a religious leader in Mobile at the time of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, he played a role in promoting racial unity.
Ferguson died as a result of the effects of advanced Alzheimer’s diesese.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Creighton Ferguson, five children and 14 grandchildren.
