Bethlehem Association launches ‘doorstep’ ministry

Bethlehem Baptist Association is reaching the community with “Lowering the Doorstep,” bluegrass fellowships aimed at people who normally would not attend church.

Country and bluegrass gospel music are popular styles among residents in Monroe County. So when a group of laypeople from churches in the association began pickin’ during a regularly-scheduled prayer breakfast, the number of participants increased rapidly.

Director of Missions Wayne McMillian was among those bringing their stringed instruments to play and pray.

As the number of participants increased, the group decided to change from a breakfast prayer time to a Monday night worship time.

The group said its goal is to create a forum where anyone would feel welcome to walk in. The doorsteps are too high for some people to just walk into church because they feel inadequate, underdressed, etc., said Bethlehem Association leaders. This is an entry-level gospel presentation aimed at helping people to take the first steop, thus the name of the meeting.
