BHS names members, officers

New officers have been named to the board of directors for Baptist Health Foundation, the philanthropic support organization of Baptist Health System (BHS), the state’s largest healthcare system.

Hatton C. V. Smith was elected as chairman of the 36-member board for 2000-2001. Other officers are M. Miller Gorrie as first vice chairman, Thomas P. Williams as second vice president and William T. Ratliff III as secretary-treasurer.

Smith, who attended Washington & Lee University, is president of Royal Cup Coffee. He and his family reside in Birmingham and attend Church of the Advent. Auburn University graduate Gorrie is chairman and chief executive officer of Brasfield & Gorrie. He and his family also live in Birmingham and attend Independent Presbyterian Church.

Williams is president of the Tom Williams Auto Group and lives in Birmingham. A graduate of Furman University, Williams and his wife attend Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Vestavia Hills.

Ratliff is chairman of the board for New South Federal Savings Bank. A Mountain Brook resident, he attended Amherst College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He and his family attend St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

New board members

Todsen also announced three new members named to the Foundation board. They are Mary D. Boehm, community and education relations manager for BellSouth; Andre J. Taylor, vice president of communications for Alabama Gas Corporation; and Charles Tickle, chief executive officer for the Daniel Corporation. The executive team leads activities of the Foundation, which is charged with the responsibility to seek charitable contributions for operating, capital improvement and endowment purposes.

In other news, Thomas W. Schultz was also named senior vice president for planning, marketing and business development of BHS. Schultz is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., with a degree in health administration.

Schultz was a fellow of the Duke Endowment to study the British National Health Service in London and is the former vice president and manager of health care investment banking for Porter White & Company.
