Board of Aid helps ministry students

Two students from the University of Mobile (UM) were on hand to share their testimonies during the report from the Board of Aid for Students in Church-related Vocations.

Speaking during the Alabama Baptist State Convention Nov. 18, Jerome King thanked the convention for giving to the fund.

“Thank you for the privilege to meet with the future leaders of Southern Baptist churches,” King said. He then introduced Chandra Martin and Matthew Spradlin, two students who have received financial help from the Board of Aid.

Martin serves at Smithtown Baptist Church, Eight Mile, with her husband, Justin, who is youth pastor. She said they are planning to go to graduate school then seminary to prepare for careers as international missionaries.

“Because of your commitment to educating Baptist students, I know the world will be changed one student at a time,” she said.

Spradlin, who serves as UM’s SGA president and was elected homecoming king this year, said the financial assistance from the Board of Aid gave him “opportunities for ministry and opportunities for service that I would not have if I hadn’t come (to UM).” Spradlin serves as the middle school intern at Shiloh Baptist Church, Saraland.

This year, 353 scholarships were awarded to undergraduate students in Alabama’s three Baptist colleges for a total of $256,432.

The Board of Aid also gave 105 scholarships students in Samford University’s Extension Division.
