Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame 2003 inductees names

Louise Branscomb of Birmingham and Beth Bolden Walcott of Tuskegee will be inducted into the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame at Judson College in Marion March 6.

The Alabama Women’s hall of Fame was established in 1970. It seeks to recognize women who have made significant contributions to the state and nation.

The Hall of Fame is housed in the A. Howard Bean Hall on the campus of Judson College in Marion.

The late Louise Branscomb graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and practiced obstetrics and gynecology from 1931 until 1975. She was a major in the U.S. Public Health Service and volunteered her services to the war effort during World War II. She was a leader in the Methodist church and in civic projects and an advocate for racial, gender and economic justice in Alabama. 

The late Beth Bolden Walcott, an Ohio native, lived her life in Alabama and served 54 years at the Tuskegee Institute. She served as librarian, teacher, writer, editor, administrator and curator, and paved the way for the school’s becoming a National Historic Site in 1965. Additionally, Walcott established a Red Cross chapter at Tuskegee Institute and served as acting field director during World War II.
