In the Feb. 20, 2003, The Alabama Baptist “Comment” titled “Religious Denominations Need a Free Press,” Bob Terry alludes to the dismissal of Bill Neal, editor of Georgia Baptists’ Christian Index. Mr. Terry states, “Thankfully, he was provided a severance that allowed the administration to say he was retiring.” Mr. Terry failed to mention that three other staff members were dismissed with no compensation. Other than his oversight, this was an excellent editorial.
An article covering the dismissal of Bill Neal and his staff appeared in The Alabama Baptist a few weeks ago.
I would like to thank The Alabama Baptist for their objective new coverage. When an editor is not free to report both sides of an issue for fear of being fired (or being fired), that paper is degraded to a puppet status.
