The welcome center of First Baptist Church, Oxford, was transformed into a time machine Nov. 13 with old directories and lots of memories. That’s because the Calhoun Baptist Association church was celebrating its 175th homecoming and anniversary.
Missionaries who came out of the church were among the roughly 400 in attendance, noted Paula East, who helped coordinate the celebration.
The special morning service included music from the senior adult choir, adult choir, children’s choir and preschoolers. Songs included “Awesome Is the Lord Most High.”
Members of two other congregations shared their musical talents as well. Church Biblica Berea sang “Because He Lives” in Spanish for the congregation, and Faith Baptist Deaf Mission, Oxford, signed the song “Hope of the Nations.”
Director of Missions Sid Nichols gave a brief message to the crowd.
Rick Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, delivered the main message, titled “What Do You Want Them to Say About Your Church?,” based on Colossians 1:3–5.
Lonette Berg, executive director of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented a framed certificate commemorating the church’s 175 years.
Also during the service, a special baptismal video was shown. It featured everyone who was baptized in the last year.
While looking to the future, Senior Pastor Terry Bostick maintains a missional focus. “I want us to be a missional church, that we’re reaching everybody in Oxford … and participating in missions around the world.”
Following the service was a dinner on the grounds. The meal included fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, macaroni and cheese, green beans and rolls. For dessert, attendees enjoyed cobbler accompanied by 30 gallons of vanilla and chocolate ice cream made on-site by church member Dwight Rice.
