Rosemary Adams, dean of the school of nursing at the University of Mobile (UM) since 1981, died July 29 in Mobile. She was 61.
Adams earned a diploma from the Mobile Infirmary School of Nursing in 1962 and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Alabama in 1964 and 1968. She received the doctorate of education, administration of higher education, from Florida State University in 1979.
She began her nursing career as a staff nurse at Mobile Infirmary in 1962 and began her career as a nursing educator in 1964 as instructor at the Mobile Infirmary school of nursing.
She was named acting director of the Mobile Infirmary school of nursing in 1968, then assistant professor of the combined Mobile College/Mobile Infirmary division of nursing associate degree in nursing program in 1974. In 1978 she became assistant professor in the Mobile College division of nursing bachelor of science in nursing program.
In addition, from 1977 to 1982 she served as clinical assistant professor in the school of nursing graduate program at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
She was named associate professor at UM in 1981, gained tenure in 1987 and served as chairman of the Mobile College division of nursing and then dean of the University of Mobile school of nursing from 1981 till her death.
“Her influence is felt throughout the entire health care community and beyond, with many hundreds of health care professionals who carry on her character, spirit and caring nature in their daily contact with people who are hurting and sick,” said Mark Foley, president of the University of Mobile.
