In 1981, McElwain Baptist Church, Birmingham, was in need of an interim staffer to run its activity center, complete with a gym and game room. Church member Jody Baker stepped up to the task Jan. 1, 1982, and has been serving ever since.
“That’s how I ended up here (on the McElwain Baptist staff), and I believe it was God’s hand, getting me to where He wanted me to be,” Baker explained.
For the past 30 years, she has had many responsibilities at the Birmingham Baptist Association church. She served as minister of youth and recreation for 15 years and currently holds the title of minister of education and administration.
In her role, Baker oversees all educational elements — from Sunday School to Discipleship Training to the child development center.
In addition, she oversees the Celebrate Recovery ministry. “It’s a tremendous ministry … showing [people] how they can find healing through Christ,” she said.
Baker said one of her greatest mentors is Earl Potts, pastor emeritus of McElwain. “He has been a tremendous encouragement to me and supporter of me and my ministry,” she said.
Personnel committee member Merrilyn “Cookie” Cook is helping plan the special Jan. 8 reception to commemorate Baker’s 30th anniversary. She divulged that many church members also are helping with the plans, and she estimated that upward of 250 people might attend.
“I honestly know of no one person [who] could have impacted a single church through their ministry as much as [Baker] has our church,” Cook said. “She’s a phenomenal Christian teacher as well.”
Baker said she has been fortunate to serve in one place. “God has really blessed me and I’m very grateful,” she said.
