Annie Ruth Cargile Drake will celebrate her 80th birthday this year. She has been involved in church ministry most of her life and has been a member of Glennwood Baptist Church, Morris, for 20 years. Drake loves to go to church, but many times, health problems make that difficult. Still she looks for ways to serve.
Q: How did you come to know the Lord?
A: In a revival at the age of 12. My legs were shaking during the invitation, but I made it to the altar somehow. I realized all I had to do was ask to be saved.
Q: What church ministries have you been involved in?
A: In the past, I did everything — teaching Training Union, Sunday School (and) [Vacation Bible School] (and serving as) a [Girls in Action] leader (and in) children’s church (and) nursery and more. My husband was a deacon, and we often worked side by side. Now my main effort is to be active in Sunday School and be involved in telephone ministry. Some folks call me a “prayer warrior,” and I support the church financially as well as our food ministry, from making a dish or donation of canned goods. It makes me feel good to do what I can and not focus on what I can’t do.
Q: What difference has Jesus Christ made in your life?
A: He has made it possible for me (to) face the hardships of life. It’s tough sometimes but God is always there.
Q: What are some of your favorite things about church?
A: The whole idea about church inspires me. Just to see the church building is a blessing as I’m quickly reminded of the wonderful, friendly fellowship which takes place inside.
