Daniel Lewis Small, retired Cleburne Baptist Association director of missions (DOM), died Dec. 16. He was 79.
A Greenfield, Mo., native, Small served as DOM from 1969 until 1994.
He designed and built Camp Back 40, a Christian camp for youth in Cleburne County, and he and his wife, Billie, wrote the programs and directed the camps for many years.
He participated in many short-term missions trips, including disaster relief and evangelism, going to places like Venezuela, Honduras and Guatemala.
After his retirement, he and his wife spent four and a half years in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as International Mission Board representatives.
Small was a graduate of Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Mo.; William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.; and Jacksonville State University.
He served as pastor of six churches in Missouri and Alabama before becoming DOM.
He coordinated and taught in Southern Union State Community
College’s Heflin Center for 10 years.
In January 2002, Small helped start Heritage Baptist Church in Heflin and served as its associate pastor until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, a daughter, a son, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
