Chris August’s 2011 single “Starry Night” from his CD “No Far Away” has the distinction of being the first debut single in more than three years to top the Christian AC (Alternative Rock — Christian) Monitored chart. It also hit the No. 1 spot in Billboard’s Christian Songs chart and won the 2011 Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year. Oh, and August won the 2011 GMA Dove New Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year awards as well, all on the strength of “No Far Away.”
August spent two years away from his Garland, Texas home pursuing a secular music career with Geffen Records, a time when he was away from the church. He says the song “Starry Night” is a “rededication of my music and my life to Jesus.” While the hit single is the record’s strongest track, there are others, such as the sunny “You and I” and the darker, serious “Battle” that help to round out this fine first effort.
August’s voice is clear, with definite R&B influences. If you’re a fan of good Christian pop with a strong message of faith, you’ll like this record.
