Want to know God?

First Baptist Church, Andalusia

One of the many blessings we have from God is our house — the literal structure in which we live. In many ways our houses should be  reminders to us of God’s continued love, care and provision for our lives.

In Deuteronomy 6:4 we read, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” These words were a challenge and a reminder of the greatness of God. The people were also reminded that they should write these words “on your doorposts and on your gates” (Deut. 6:9) to help them remember. When we think about it, our houses can become a daily symbol for us of God’s blessings.

For example, our doors can remind us of the description Jesus used of Himself in John 10:7: “I am the door.” And in Revelation 3:20 Jesus said, “Behold I stand at the door and knock.”

The windows in our houses can remind us of God’s words through the prophet Malachi. “Bring all the tithe to the storehouse … try me now in this … if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it” (Mal. 3:10).

The foundations of our houses remind us that God has laid “in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame” (1 Pet. 2:6) and that our lives are supported by our trust in Jesus (Matt. 7:24–25).

In every house there are furniture and decorations that are arranged to bring beauty to the house, just as God fills the Christian’s life and creates beauty with the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22–23).

The dining room can help us recall the words of Jesus when He said, “If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me” (Rev. 3:20) and of the parable that Jesus told of the “great supper” (Luke 14:15–24).

Our bedrooms, places of rest, can help us to remember the call of Jesus, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28).

Everywhere we turn in our houses, we can be reminded of God’s love, care and provision. May we always praise Him for His many blessings. God is good all the time!
