In the choir loft of First Baptist Church, Falkville, in Morgan Baptist Association sat an actual airplane on display. The display was used by the church as part of this year’s LifeWay Christian Resources’ “Amazing Wonders Aviation” Vacation Bible School (VBS) held in late June.
Michelle Ferrell directs the church’s VBS and asked Pastor Greg Burcham if his airplane could be used to get kids excited about VBS.
“Our pastor is a pilot and has a small airplane, and after I talked with him he agreed to allow us to use the plane for the VBS display,” she said.
Burcham described Ferrell as an energetic, visionary VBS director. Under Ferrell’s leadership, the amount of children registered has nearly tripled.
At the end of the VBS, 116 learners were registered and six children were saved, which is the most First, Falkville, has ever had come to Christ during VBS. The church also is in contact with the families of 10 children who do not have church homes.
“We started to have VBS at night and serve a full supper,” Ferrell said about some of the changes they made to continue to grow their VBS. “We also print out fliers that we give to a local school that they send home to families, and we use Facebook as a promotional tool.”
Ferrell is a longtime member of her church.
“She coordinates getting the materials, recruits the people and gets people excited about it,” Burcham said.
According to Ferrell, leading VBS has helped her own spiritual growth because she has begun to pray more throughout the day.
“I get up in the morning and have prayer time, and I know some of the goals I have set for this VBS would not have been reached without prayer,” she said.
Ferrell, a mother of two girls and former Army wife whose husband is now retired, began directing VBS three years ago for First, Falkville.
“The first year I directed VBS, it began on the day my husband came back from his deployment,” Ferrell said. “This called for me to balance activities with my VBS workers who are great people.”
As a mother who balances home obligations and is active in church, Ferrell urges others to do the same to uplift God’s kingdom.
“I hope other young mothers will not be afraid to get involved in church, find someone who can help guide them in leading a project as I did and jump right in to give it their very best,” she said.
